      Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 13, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at OrderAhead

      Interview

I had two phone interviews, both with engineers within the company. I felt like the entire process was not well organized, and the more I learned about them the less and less I liked them. First, the noise. My phone interviews happened with my interviewers in noisy environments. I had to pause multiple times during each call to make sure they could still hear me, and was responded to with a "go on", as if everything on their end was fine and that I shouldn't have even brought up that fact. Well, here's the thing: It's kind of impossible to hear myself when this happens. There was no structure for these interviews, with both engineers not really sure what to talk about next. It was pretty awkward and not very well planned. When I asked about the organization, I was pretty surprised to find out that after this many years in business they did not have their stuff together. Lack of code reviews, no real timelines/dev cycles, no real roadmap (this was the biggest negative here, next to how they conducted code reviews). Their technology choices were pretty questionable at best, with no real answers to how their choices optimized for performance (especially in their market). I never heard back from this company. I knew after my second phone interview that I was not interested in pursuing them any further so I'm glad I didn't waste any more time here, but it's pretty unprofessional to leave candidates in the dark like this. On a side note, I did some digging and found this company's shady history of manipulating Google search results and hijacking merchant pages with their own ones. While I can't ding them for this business practice (seriously, I think it's admirable), I'm really weary of how they responded to the press surrounding it (blocking reporters on Twitter, co-founders privatizing their Twitter accounts), since it really makes the company look weak. This is a YC-backed startup, and I really expected much more of them.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I'm almost definitely someone you talked to, so it's very helpful to hear this. I'm surprised you didn't hear back - we do our best to respond to everyone even though it may take us a bit. However, it's pretty clear that we didn't communicate with you effectively. We have a code review system, 4-6 week sprints, and a 6-12 month and beyond roadmap that's well documented. Our tech stack is pretty standard and we're using algorithms developed from research papers. Somehow we didn't communicate any of this, and we'll definitely work on this in the future. We're very comfortable talking about our business practices, so please reach out if you have any more questions!
