Interview
It’s time to be honest about how much time companies waste during the interview process.
I understand that recruiters speak with multiple candidates. That’s expected. What’s not acceptable is reaching out to more people than you can realistically manage, then leaving candidates in limbo for weeks. If someone interviews well but isn’t the top choice, that’s fine, but communicate that. Or, if you want to explore additional candidates, do so before advancing people through steps that imply momentum.
Waiting three to four weeks with no communication, only to suddenly receive a generic rejection email, reflects poorly on the company and the recruiting team. At that point, the role may not even be on a candidate’s radar anymore, especially in a market where ghosting has become common.
Recruiting is a two-way evaluation. Candidates invest time, preparation, and emotional energy into interviews. Basic communication and timely follow-ups aren’t a courtesy; they’re part of doing the job professionally.
Companies need to start holding recruiters accountable for candidate experience.
