I would never have applied for a job at this awful insurer had a 3rd-party recruiter not begged me for permission to submit. The video interview lasted an hour with the hiring manager who would have my boss. In retrospect, there was all sorts of red flags. He got chummy right away, speaking at some length about his camping trips; his fabulous house in a posh, low-crime area; how glad he was to meet another Easterner in Portland; how much he resented the company mandating him to work on a PC rather than a Mac; and last yet not least how his wife's Southern accent emerges in full force when she's mad at him. Not once did interviewer ask how would I approach researching and writing for the healthcare insurance niche. When a canned rejection arrived 2 weeks later, I asked him why. "We just went with someone had direct industry experience." Which turned out to be a total lie. Quick sleuthing of their new hire LinkedIn profile reveals that she, like me, had never written for an insurance company previously. When confronted with this lie, the company "leadership" failed to respond -- silently endorsing their employee's abuse of power. ALSO: why interview me in the first place when you know in advance that I don't meet your ersatz criteria??
