I drove 4 hours to interview at the Riviera Beach, FL location. I walked into the building and it was a relaxed atmosphere. The lady at the front was eating a sub & told me that she didn't know that someone was coming in to interview & had to make a call to verify my appointment. Once she did, I was directed to an open room with a computer and was given a technical assessment.
ASSESSMENT
The assessment involved some personality & ethics type questions along with some basic math and technical questions. A technical question, for example, would be: If a gear is turning clockwise, which direction is the third gear from it turning? Once I completed the assessment, the computer was acting up and did not show my results, even after 20min of waiting (the lady told me to just wait a few minutes because sometimes it takes a while to show results). The lady had to make a phone call to check my results & once she was told that I passed, I was allowed to interview face-to-face.
INTERVIEW
I sat in an empty conference room with one man who had two pages printed out with ~6 questions printed on them where he took notes for each question. He stuck to the questions, but did make a couple comments that lead me to believe that he preferred to hire a man for the position. Right away he emphasized that the position involved a lot of heavy lifting (syrups, etc.) and asked if I was sure that that was something that I was still interested in doing. He also described the position using the word "you" - You would be doing a lot of mixing - and after describing the position said, "I'm saying 'you' but it doesn't mean that you got the job." He also mentioned that he doesn't want to bring in any drama. Aside from those comments, he primarily stuck to the questions, so it was a pretty easy and relaxed interview. The interviewer spent 10 years in the Navy before working for Pepsi and worked his way up over many years. He was a friendly interviewer & was not rude or aggressive, so it made for a pleasant interview experience.
From start to finish, I was on site for about 2 hours.
OUTCOME
I was not hired. I received an email that stated, "Thank you for your interest in a position with Pepsi Beverages Company. While your background has many impressive aspects, we have selected candidates that more closely fit our current business needs. Again, thank you for your interest in Pepsi Beverages Company."
I have a degree in Chemistry, experience in environmental laboratories (e.g., dealing with water testing & quality control) and administration - i.e., met the qualifications listed - and passed their technical assessment. The interview seemed to have gone well, also, but I suppose that there was another, better fit for the position. Next time, Pepsi, Next time... ;)
RANDOM OBSERVATIONS
All of the administrative persons working on this day were women (various ethnicity & ages). The women wore business casual clothing. While I waited to be called for the interview, about 20 men walked out of the building. Approximately 95% of the men were African American of various ages. The men wore bright orange T-shirts with black shorts. The interviewer was a middle-aged White man. The interviewer wore a button-down shirt with pants. It was a very relaxed atmosphere. Everyone seemed very happy at this location. It seemed like a great place to work.
