Interview
I applied for a full time aquatics specialist position as well as a sales associate position via the petco online website.I received a phone call asking for a group interview at 2:00 pm the following Monday. I arrived probably 15 minutes early and was told that the people interviewing me were busy with a conference call.While I was waiting I decided to walk around the store and check it out. I noticed 4 or 5 dead fish floating in their fish tanks as well as signs around the store referencing events from the previous month. At approx. 2:15 pm the managers came out and told us they were ready to begin the interview. We sat down and they told us a little bit about themselves, and we proceeded to tell them about ourselves. Mostly just who we are, why we wanted to work at Petco, etc. After that the managers told us to take a couple (5-15min) to look around the store for an item and then to return and give a sales pitch about it. I selected an item and went back and each applicant proceeded to give a couple minute pitch on the item. It felt more like an infomercial for the items, rather than the type of sales interaction one would expect in the retail environment. Following that they met with each of us individually and told us the positions open were all cashier positions that would be part-time. It was confusing based on what I had applied for on their website.
Straight forward and not difficult. It's just a standard retail interview, no curveballs, no trick questions. Just practice a little beforehand and it'll go smoothly. Make sure to ask questions of your own at the end.

Do you have experience handling customers during a rush?
It was a basic sales job interview. Basically they want to know you are a hard worker and kind to animals. I don't think they really care as long as you are willing to work hard.
The interview process is very easy. They are not too picky, they just want to make sure that you will work and can comprehend the simple parts of the job. And that you are okay with small animals.
