      Machine Learning Scientist Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at PicnicAI in Oct 2019

      Interview

I applied online for the job. Their work was very similar to what I was doing. Their recruiter approached and we had a nice introductory conversation. She was a really nice person. The next two rounds were talking with hiring manager and a code screening with a platform called karat. I talked to hiring manager and he was also a nice person and everything went very well. Karat interview was the point that everything went south. The interviewer was nice but the problem was she was interviewing me for a software engineer position and I specifically told recruiter that I'm not a software engineer. She started the interview with two software design questions each for 5 minutes. In both questions, it took at least 2 minutes to explain the question. The next part was 30 minutes coding question. She told me there is no limit in the number of questions that you can solve but generally we expect to solve 2 questions in 30 min. I solved just one that it was similar to medium LC questions. Couple of days later received rejection email. It was my mistake to apply for this position

Thanks for taking the time to share insights about your interview with us. In hearing about your experience, I see that we could have done a better job of framing the purpose of the Karat interview and how that aligns with what we're looking for in our ML Engineers, e.g. Karat is primarily focused on CS/programming fundamentals and we use it for our ML Engineering candidates because we are currently prioritizing building a team of ML Engineers with significant programming experience. As we grow we hope to be able to bring in more ML Scientists with less emphasizing on the programming.
