      Full Stack Engineer Interview

      Oct 30, 2020
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at PicnicAI (San Francisco, CA) in Sep 2020

      Interview

Calls with a recruiter and technical manager, a Karat technical screen, then a take-home assignment followed by a (virtual) on-site day with pair programming sessions expanding the take-home, lunch with the team, and cross-functional meetings (with product manager types). I can't imagine a better or more humane technical interviewing process than PicnicHealth's. After the Karat screen, the entire process was incredibly personal and provided great opportunities to showcase my strengths and dig deeper into things that interested me. Although the onsite was fairly long, it flew by thanks to its customizable nature and the great folks at Picnic.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Karat: How to relation across tables, standard hackerrank string/array parsing Picnic onsite: Why did you decide to implement X in this way? Can you think of a way to improve your algorithm's performance? What might account for the increase in performance when we change X?

      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at PicnicAI (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2021

      Interview

Manager screening: I had some introductory conversations with the VP of Engineering. Karat technical interview: this was a one hour screen-share coding session to work through problems. Take-home project: PicnicHealth have a "mostly working" codebase they ask you to get working and to suggest/implement improvements. In my case I focused mostly on backend improvements. The PicnicHealth team do a code review (interactive via Github) and so I made some additional changes based on that. Onsite: after an initial introduction to the team, we discussed some extensions to the take-home and then spent the rest of the day in 1-on-1 pairings working through the code. This time doubled as an opportunity to find out more about the team and vice versa, but I was pretty focussed on trying to get the work done!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

There was no specific "question" in the sense of a particular piece of programming trivia. Since the discussion started from what I had done on the take-home, the discussion topics were things like "please explain why you chose to separate the database interaction logic from the model classes".
