      Computational Geometry Interview

      Sep 24, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Plethora

      Interview

Initial HR interview, then interview with one of the Team members / Hiring managers. Then a Coding Challenge. The coding challenge is very easy. They however expect you to use online library available . They also expect you to code in C#. They are more worried about the software intent than Computational geometry knowledge. The position is mainly a developer, who understands geometry. Computational geometry is a whole different field.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Basic questions on my resume, Software projects. Hiring Manager interview was good , mostly on resume and my projects. The coding challenge was good and very easy. I could finish it in few hours if you use everything of your own.

Being a good developer is a large component of this position and writing maintainable well structured code for geometric algorithms is critical. Both math and programming skills are also critical in order to be successful in this role. Candidates who are able to clearly and thoughtfully articulate software solutions to geometry problems have been the most successful on our team and have transitioned smoothly into the organization. Every coding challenge we send to candidates emphasizes, at the start, they should use the language they feel most comfortable with. We are grateful to everyone we’ve spoken with, especially those who have participated in a technical phone interview and the coding challenge. It is our hope that regardless of the outcome, everyone has a positive experience with us and I’m sorry this doesn’t seem to be the case here. We appreciate feedback and the opportunity to consider how we can modify our interview process.

      Interview

Similar to the previous reviewer. The interview process was overall positive but I'm not going to mark my experience with them as positive because the outcome was negative (not because I did not get an offer). They have a code test that mimics their work. I submitted my at least decent code test which, as they emphasized, focused on writing quality code and not the geometry aspect. Their review of my code was positive (the parts that actually matter for being part of their team) but they faulted me for a trivial (from my point of view but major from their point of view) geometry 'mistake' that would have been impossible for me to get unless I knew the details of their business. The funny thing is my code gave numerically correct answers to their test cases. With this 'mistake', my rather high qualifications were promptly dismissed. Heck it would have been ok if they 'discounted' my qualification to the job because of this 'mistake' but they went ahead and just dismissed me. For this ridiculousness, they get a NEGATIVE from me. FYI, this position(s) has been open for the better part of a year as far as I know..so maybe more. They are willing to wait months until someone gets through their process. While the skills required are rare, it shouldn't be this difficult for them to get qualified people. I can see why they wait months at a time.
