I was referred by an employee and was invited for a 1 hour interview in person. Prior to receiving the interview invite I had to do a 1 hour revit test. Although I was given an offer shortly after the interview, I had a terrible experience after this. At the interview I shared I have caring responsibilities and was told this is something that can be discussed further at offer stage. I mentioned I would require 2 days working from home. I received an offer a few days later and was told 2 days at home was not possible. They offered me an alternative solution, which was a 4 day working week including 1 day working from home. I accepted this offer via email and was told a formal offer approval is in place, and it should take a few days to get confirmed. 2 weeks later I had still not heard back. I was told that they are "having issues getting the part time hours signed off" which was ",no surprise given how busy" they are. I was also told "It might be detrimental to you, working less hours because project demands are so strong, and we don’t want to strain your life either."
They also kept questioning how I could possibly manage a busy job and have caring responsibilities. I am baffled given they are such a big company, surely there must be other care givers or parents - are they just shown the door when flexible working requests are made? Given the known nature of populous employees working well into the night at 3am, I clearly wasn't the ideal the candidate as my life outside work would get in the way of their "busy projects" that mattered more than anything else. This was in October 2023 and now we are nearly in March 2024. They did not even bother emailing me back to say they would like to withdraw the offer. I have sought advice and have considered taking the matter further, given a written confirmation of an offer was there, however I personally feel this will really take a toll on me and I cannot be bothered as clearly this is the wrong workplace for me. I really wonder how they will respond to new legislative changes regarding flexible working in April. Honestly this experience left me with a bad taste and I do not recommend going ahead with such a unsupportive and callous culture with no regards for their employees, that is further encouraged by their HR team.
