I applied online. The process took 9 months. I interviewed at Princeton University
Interview
From application to rejection, the process took nearly 9 months. I applied in August, did my first virtual interview in late January, and then had an in-person interview in late March. The interviews themselves were a mostly positive experience, and everyone I met with in-person or virtually was very nice and welcoming. Both interviews were with members of the hiring committee rather than HR reps.
Apart from the sheer amount of time it took to go through the entire process, there were two inexcusable aspects of the interview process:
1) The hiring committee would not and could not share salary information, even during the finalist interview. They said that for non-academic appointments, salaries are only discussed with HR AFTER an offer is made, which was a massive red flag.
2) I did not expect to receive an offer, as I sensed mutual hesitancy about my fit for the position (totally fair). However, after nine months and two interviews that included me taking time to travel to Princeton (though on Princeton's budget) and spending half a day with the hiring committee, I received an auto-generated HR rejection from the "Talent Acquisition Team" telling me that "I had not been selected for an interview." I understand that people are busy, but finalist candidates deserve at least an accurate form rejection, if not a brief personalized e-mail. To put it mildly, I thought this was incredibly unprofessional.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
All of my questions were directly related to the position and how my qualifications, past experiences, and interests aligned with both the position and the mission of the department. There were very few standard HR questions.
Thank you for your interest in working at Princeton University. We appreciate your participation in our hiring process and your taking the time to leave us a review.
