I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at RAND (Washington, DC) in Oct 2020
Interview
I had to prepare a 40 minute presentation on a topic of my choosing and review it with a hiring manager before submitting it as part of the interview process. Then there was a day long series of interviews scheduled along with my presentation that was given to a large audience.

Question 1
Given I had experience with their reports and had read a few, they asked if I had any additional ideas or commentary on one of the reports.
I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at RAND (Washington, DC) in Apr 2018
Interview
Pre-screen call. Did not interview me for position I applied for, but much more senior position (which I did not want).
45 minutes, not technical, mostly about ability to network DoD and get access to soft money.
Job description unintentionally misleading (clearance is required for almost all jobs).
8+ weeks till someone got back to me after submitting application online.
After phone screen (obvious mismatch since not the position nor the parameters I had in mind) followed by very fast rejection from HR (1 day turnaround) which is a positive. Online site does not let you delete your profile after application, one remains in the system.
