I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at REI Systems (Sterling, VA) in Mar 2018
Interview
A recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn regarding a position they're opening at Sterling, VA location. I spoke to the recruiter briefly (some discussions on salary, benefits etc.) then he told me someone from the development team will conduct a phone screen with me.
Phone interview: This developer asked me too many unpractical questions especially the definition of certain programming terminologies. I told him I have been out of school for too many years now, there is no way I can remember how to define those words, but instead I offered him examples on how I use these concepts. He didn't seem to be pleased by my response. I guess I should have just sat in front of a computer and Google every single terminologies he asked.
Anyway, he decided to move forward with an in-person interview. The recruiter informed me that the in-person interview will take at least 3 hours, he asked me to give him a few dates/times that I can come in for the interview. With my busy work schedule that time, I was only able to come out with very few options. After countless of scheduled and rescheduled, we finally found a date that works for the interview penal. On the day of the interview, 30 minutes before the scheduled time, the recruiter called me and told me that they have cancelled the interview due to "scheduling conflict". That's right - 30 minutes before the interview. He promised me he will get back to me as soon as he found out another available time but I have not heard from him since then.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Too many terminologies. (i.e. define classes, delegates, api, instantiate vs initiate etc.)
The interview process contains at least 3 Rounds. 1. Technical Round (Tech-related questions) 2. Advanced Technical Round (In-depth interview on specific technologies) 3. Project Manager round (Like a job fit)
I interviewed with REI over the phone with a recruiter for a position. We simply went over some job listing check marks in an initial phone screen. He did not seem very knowledgeable over what technologies were even being asked, but he was able to navigate it well enough
Upon asking for my salary expectations, I said I did not know enough about the exact position to say. He proceeded to become extremely condescending and start lecturing me about how I should be negotiating my salary. I hung up because I am screening for a job interview, not battling with someone on how salary negotiation should be handled.
The recruiter then proceeded to text me an offer to teach me "how to handle the salary question" and how he was "more than willing to give it to (me)". It was really unprofessional and this would also be the first time I have ever hung up on a recruiter mid interview
