      Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 6, 2017

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at RTS Labs (Henrico, VA) in Jul 2017

      Interview

It was a very thorough, but pleasant interview process. It goes: Informational phone interview -> Technical Interview & Live Coding Challenge -> Case Study Interview -> Behavioral Interview -> Offer The informational phone interview is self-explanatory. The Technical Interview consisted of questions that would be learned in a classroom, which is fitting since they knew I was a fresh graduate. Questions like "what are some of the principles of object oriented programming?" If you're fresh out of college and review all the material you've learned, you should be fine for that. The Live Coding Challenge, which was part of the same interview, consisted of a coding practice that would start easy, and progressively get harder and harder with each iteration. It wasn't a requirement that the code be executable. They just wanted to see if you know your stuff for the most part, and to see how you think about and approach problems. The Case Study Interview was the hardest for me. What they do is give you a piece of paper with a business problem, some scratch paper, a pencil, and they give you about thirty minutes to answer various questions about how you would go about solving the problem. It felt like a stress-test for me due to the limited time, but in hindsight it probably only seemed like the time was so short because I was nervous. You can expect some high-level questions for this part, but also at least one very technical question that will likely take the majority of the time. Finally, there's the behavioral interview. This one is conducted with the CEO, and it's basically him screening you and getting to know you to see if you'd be a good fit personality-wise for the company, and vice-versa. Overall, the entire experience was incredibly pleasant. While you're still just an applicant, these people make you feel like family. I would recommend the process to anyone who's looking for a long-term employer who truly cares about employees.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at RTS Labs

      Interview

The recruiter reached out to me about the role and asked for my current compensation and expectations, which I shared openly. When I asked about the compensation range for the position, they dodged and said that they “pay on average for the area.” After the initial screening, I never heard back. It made it hard to tell if there was even a realistic fit. Especially since they initiated outreach, a bit more transparency would’ve saved both sides some time...
