They always need people, so they usually hire on the spot. It is that easy. I applied online to save paper, although they have paper applications at my store. Highlight soft skills like communication, organization, pattern recognition, willingness to work hard, etc. All will help you find customers what they need and to recover your area on the job. Previous work experience is not required, but did help me become what they would call a “strong hire” even though they hire pretty much everyone anyway. Highlight work with registers, etc.
Going in to meet the manager is not necessary as the managers that work most of the time are assistant managers and don’t make hiring decisions. I applied online and waited for them to call. As long as you have the soft skill keywords the computer softwares scan the resumes for, you will most likely get a call back a few days later to come for an in person interview with the store manager. If you don’t have work experience, here is the chance to highlight the same things in other places. If they ask how you deal with a disgruntled customer, this is your chance to give an example of how you disgruntled person somewhere else like at home, school, or while doing activities. It also wouldn’t hurt to look up how people experienced in customer service do this.
