      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Jan 28, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Recharge Payments in Dec 2021

      Interview

I was scouted by a recruiter and referred to an internal recruiter. Then I had a call with an engineering manager, which did not include a tech screen. After that, I had two tech screens. After that was another interview with a different engineering manager and then with a product manager.

      1) Given a sample API response, transform and filter it according to certain parameters and make the accompanying tests pass. 2) Given a half-finished app which made OAuth requests and stored information in a DB, fix it up and make the tests pass.

      Interview

Recruiter call and then interview with the HM. No questions asked about my skills in relation to the role. It was more about the HM asking questions they were comfortable with during their time as an engineer. It was like asking a dentist to explain how x-rays work. Somewhat tangential to the job, but not the job role I was applying for at all. Received an email from the recruiter stating that they were going with candidates more aligned to the role after telling me that they were specifically hiring for my skillset. How would they know that I'm not aligned to the role if they never asked me any questions about the role? Felt very biased.

      Question 1

I was asked a system design question that had nothing to do with my role.

      Interview

Would strongly recommend not interviewing here. The recruiter slipped that they don’t assess candidates based on their individual merits but work to push through a cohort of applicants at the same time to get the best value candidate and reduce costs. Despite a C-suite interview saying they’re excited to have me join, they dragged on not giving an offer while I was waiting with other offers. Needless to say, not a great experience and seemed very unprofessional. Engineers themselves were super nice, so hopefully just bad recruiters not overall company.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Recharge Payments (New York, NY) in Dec 2021

      Interview

      1. Intro call with the recruiter 2. Interview with Eng Manager (general experience questions, some open-ended questions) 3. Onsite consisting of 4 parts: debugging, coding, product, pragmatism & scale 4. Executive interview Overall, it was great interviewing at Recharge. Everyone I met was very nice and informative. The recruiters were super helpful in moving me along the process quickly. I didn't feel there were any crazy questions or curveball questions. If you're a good engineer and ask good questions, then you should be fine :)
