      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 22, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Revolut (London, England) in Nov 2024

      Interview

Be prepared to go through a 5 stage interview process..yes you read that right, 5. I started out our initial call with an internal recruiter and the experience quickly turned sour. The recruiter's lack of technical knowledge was evident, and they seemed more interested in testing my ability to recall specific terminology rather than assessing my actual skills. Any answer that wasn't word-for-word accurate was met with condescending tone which was frustrating. To my surprise, the recruiter told me I had moved on to the next stage, which was supposed to be a technical round. However, I soon realized that this was actually the first stage, and I was expected to proceed with the live coding round. The live coding round was a disaster. The interviewer was late, showed little interest in our interaction, and provided a vague problem description for a URL shortener challenge. I had to spend 15 minutes clarifying the requirements, which was unacceptable. I was expecting a more structured approach like a GitHub repository or a hackerrank interface. After completing the challenge, I received a passive-aggressive email stating that they were looking for specific skill sets. In reality, it seemed they were looking for someone who could memorize a vast amount of technical terminology, rather than a developer with actual skills and experience. Overall, I was disappointed and frustrated with the interview process. It was a waste of my time and energy, and I would not recommend this company to others.

      Interview

The experience was similar to what has already been described by others. I passed the first two stages but did not pass the system design interview. My first attempt was definitely on me — I was not prepared well enough. I took the feedback seriously, prepared much better for the second attempt, and expected a more balanced evaluation. However, the second system design interview felt frustrating because the interviewer repeatedly guided the discussion toward minor or less important parts of the design, which consumed a significant amount of time and prevented me from properly covering the core architecture and trade-offs. Overall, the process was useful, but the system design stage felt inconsistent and highly dependent on the interviewer’s style.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Revolut (Singapore) in Jun 2026

      Interview

The coding round itself isn't particularly difficult. The challenge isn't solving the problem—it's writing code that could realistically be shipped to production. Getting the code to work is the baseline. What the interview really evaluates is whether you naturally make production-quality engineering decisions: choosing appropriate data models, validating inputs, designing maintainable APIs, handling edge cases, considering concurrency, writing tests, and producing code that can evolve as requirements change. My impression is that they're testing engineering habits more than pure problem-solving ability. You can solve the problem correctly and still struggle if your design choices suggest the code wouldn't be suitable for a real production system.
