      Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Interview

      Jun 9, 2018
      Anonymous employee
      Oxnard, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Rheem (Oxnard, CA) in Oct 2017

      Interview

One phone interview with manager of design group, about 20 minutes. Good conversation, some technical talk, mostly wanted to see if I could do the job. In person interview with same person about a week later. Lasted less than an hour, as we both felt we had a good understanding of each other; from my own end, I knew I could be successful in the position, while he was also confident that I would do well if hired. I was given an offer and I accepted it the following week. I started the week after. Hiring process was very smooth and pleasant. However, looking back, I should have been way more apprehensive about how easy the process was. I should asked a lot more direct, detailed questions about the job description and what I would be doing the first 6 months. Particularly because there are so many highly negative reviews on Glassdoor about poor management and bad treatment of employees. Those bad reviews are right on the money. For me, taking the job ended up being a huge mistake and the only time in my career I have actually regretted accepting a job offer. From day one, the actual job was very different from the job description, and the friendly manager who interviewed me showed his true colors at the end of the first week when I dared to ask for some more challenging work. After that, it was all down hill. As it turned out, only “the clique” gets the good projects (or any projects for that matter), and new employees are only there for the Managers to pick on, and to throw under the bus when Rheem comes in and wants to know why every new design project takes three times as long as it should and why the backlog of EO’s continues to grow and never improves. This same friendly manager blamed it all on me and I was let go. It’s actually funny because I never was even given a relevant project or a chance to fail. I could understand if I had messed up a project, but I was not even given an opportunity to fail. My advice is if you are going to work at Rheem/Raypak, do your homework and ask a lot of detailed questions. If you can, get things in writing. Because once you start, you will be you managers personal whipping boy and if he is really doing a bad job, expect to become your managers personal scapegoat. Sad but true.
