I was contacted by Rockstar Games regarding a potential animation position. The interview started off well and the conversation was engaging, but it eventually became more personal than I expected.
I was asked questions about the size of my bed, how large of a moving truck I would need, whether I was dating anyone, and if I had any pets. While I understand these questions were likely intended to estimate relocation costs, I felt they would have been more appropriate after an offer had been made rather than during the interview itself.
The biggest issue, however, was the compensation. The salary offered was significantly lower than I expected for the role, especially considering the experience required and the cost of relocating. I respectfully declined the opportunity and moved on.
From my perspective, this reflects a broader trend within parts of the AAA games industry. Studios such as Rockstar and Ubisoft have increasingly relied on outsourcing animation work to lower-cost regions, which can put downward pressure on salaries for in-house positions in Europe and North America. Whether intentional or not, it is a concern that I don't see discussed often enough.
Overall, everyone I spoke with was professional and courteous, but the interview process and compensation did not align with my expectations.
