Filled out an application form and received an email the same day to complete online assessments. Completed online assessments on the same day and the company got back to me on the same day saying I have passed the assessment and will look at my application form. The next day I was emailed saying I have passed my application and received an interview. The email contained details to prepare 2 presentations. One for motivation and innovation (5 minutes) and the other for technical knowledge (10 minutes).
Interview day:
The interview started at 8:15 am and ended at 14:00. 5 people showed up for the interview on the day which is a smaller group than the usual 20. However, we got to know each other well which is nice.
Programme for the day:
1. Getting to know each other and the interviewers
2. Motivation and Innovation Interview with competency questions afterward
The questions are your standard ones you would expect and knowledge of the company such as name a couple of our customers, where do you see yourself in 5 years, what would you do if you were Warren East for the day, what is the current media on Rolls-Royce right now?
3. Application of knowledge interview with technical knowledge afterward
Make sure you understand the function and operation of a gas turbine engine properly or whatever it is that Rolls-Royce asks you to prepare for the interview. The questions they ask afterward are challenging but do not be intimidated because they just want to know how you think (they guide you through) so make sure you say what you are thinking. For example, I was given a small piece of a jet engine with a paper of the schematics and asked to identify where this piece comes from.
4. Group exercise
We needed to make a paper airplane following very strict instructions under time pressure and follow with a presentation. The role of this exercise is not to finish the assignment, great if you do, but to see how you work in a team. So make sure you contribute to the exercise. Tip: if there are many people who are dominant (leaders) do not add to this but be a follower and vice versa, if no one is taking charge be the leader. Better to be a chameleon who can adapt to any role so the team can work effectively together. The assessors are only a metres from you which can be a bit intimidation but do not let this get the best of you. Make sure you also project your voice so the assessors can hear your ideas.
The interview is not a competition. Rolls-Royce has space to accommodate everyone (what we were told). They are not making any assumptions about you. They invite you to the interview because they already think you are capable of the role. You just need to show them on the day that you have what it takes.
