      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Roofstock (Oakland, CA) in Apr 2018

      Interview

I applied online and got a pretty fast response to my application. The hiring manager reached out to me and we did a 30 minute phone interview. It was pleasant, although I could tell she was extremely busy. I enjoyed our conversation and looked forward to the next steps. It took about 3 weeks to hear news that I had moved on to the next round. I had sent a check-in email in the interim and didn't hear back, so it honestly caught me by surprise. I was happy to come in and see if the position was a fit. The in-person interview was 3 hours. Everyone I met was extremely pleasant and warm. I didn't feel like the questions were redundant and felt like everyone had something specific they were supposed to focus on in their interviews. All of the interviews seemed very conversational - no "gotcha" questions. It was a nice balance between the people genuinely wanting to get to know me as well as the work I've done in the past. They all genuinely seemed to like working at Roofstock. There were some last-minute switches and the last person I spoke to was someone who was unprepared to interview me. We still had a great chat although the first minute or two was awkward (since he hadn't had a chance to prep or look over my resume at all). Three of the four interviewers mentioned to me in our interviews that I was overqualified for the position, so by the time I left the interview I figured unless they changed the scope of the role, I wouldn't be getting the job. I waited about three weeks to hear if they had made a decision (and was hoping to at least get some feedback if I didn't get the job). I emailed the recruiter and was forwarded to another manager, who didn't get back to me. I followed up again about two weeks later and she profusely apologized and gave me a small update that they were still interviewing for the position (nearly a month after I did my last round). I think if I had been more in love with the position I would've been a little more annoyed than I was at the amount of time it took to hear back - but at the end of the day, I wasn't and just wanted to get the yes/no outcome so I could move on. When I found out they went with another candidate, the hiring manager called me personally and was very kind about it. I appreciated the time she took to call and she gave me great feedback about my interview. At the end of the day, it wasn't the right fit and I agreed with their decision. I just wish it would've taken less time - but then again sometimes life happens and things come up that are out of a company's control. Overall - a good experience.
