A recruiter in the Ropes & Gray HR department found my profile on LinkedIn and she told me that based on my experience, I was exactly what they were looking for and she asked me if I was interested in the position and if I'd like to speak with her for a phone screen interview. I had a phone screen with her about a week later, at which time she made some representations to me about the position in terms of career growth and advancement. At the end of the phone screen, I was immediately invited to come in for an in-person interview with the hiring manager. The hiring manager was about 15 minutes late for the interview, and proceeded to talk only about herself. She was condescending and rude, and barely asked me any questions. She also said to me "I have serious concerns about your resume and experience." It was the exact same job I was doing at the time (albeit at a different company), and remember, they were the ones that found me and told me that I was exactly what they were looking for - I wasn't looking for a job at the time, and I was really only there because I was hoping I'd be able to earn more money at their company. When later in the interview I mentioned to the hiring manager what the recruiter had told me about career advancement, she explicitly told me "There's no way. The only reason that happened for [Name of Person who had just been promoted out of the position I was interviewing for] was because she was so amazing and did such a great job. I really just don't see that happening for you here. Ever." The interview ended shortly after, I didn't send any follow ups or thank you notes (because why would I?!), and about a month later I received an email from the recruiter saying thank you for interviewing but we've gone with someone else.
