Being a PhD student and having a CS background, I was approached to teach technically oriented courses from the beginning of my PhD program. I taught these courses as part of my GA duties. However, this changed to a more comprehensive adjunct instructor position after my fourth year in the PhD program. There was no formal hiring process.

Teaching experience in a small and large classroom
I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at SUNY Buffalo (Amherst, NY) in Dec 2012
Interview
Easy interview itself but a lot of bureaucratic red tape. Had several phone calls and emails from department chair to set up meeting and then department administrator to cancel and reschedule meetings. This was mainly because it was the busiest time if the semester. The chair was extremely nice but mostly vague about everything.
