I applied online for a MSW internship and received a call back 2 days later from their HR department to have a follow up phone screen interview. I was first informed that there were two open MSW internships for the upcoming semester. I was then told that since I did not attend UND's for my graduate degree that they would be unable to give me an interview most likely. HR informed me that they had a "contract" with UND to use UND graduate students prior to outside institutions being allowed to apply. If there were no UND students applying for a certain semster, then internships would be opened up to students from other institutions. There was no merit based system in place and after I pointed out the lack of screening applicants on qualifications was unethical the HR rep became evasive and stated that I would receive a call back.
When I received a call back it was from the HR rep's supervisor who stated that there were no MSW internships available for the upcoming semester. This was a blatant lie as the previous worker had told me differently and was not in trouble for divulging unethical company practices.
