I was referring to Marc, the CEO, by a friend. This friend was interested in joining the team but received an offer elsewhere so they referred me. I had a conversation with Marc for about 30 minutes speaking about my background, the company and what I would be doing. I was then told that I would be receiving a phone call from a Senior Engineer. This conversation happened a few days later and we discussed some generic but technical questions. Some of the daily tasks were also described during this phone call. I received a phone call that same day from Marc saying that I was liked my him and the Senior Engineer for this position. We spoke about how they were excited about me joining the team but would need to do a meet and greet before an offer could be written. I completely understood that since I had not met anyone yet. Marc then told me that once I met everyone and if nothing unexpected happened I would be hopefully joining the team soon. I was scheduled to come into the office a couple of days later. Marc was not in the office quite yet and I was met by members of the engineering team. I was brought into a room and I said I looked forward to meeting everyone since I was under the impression that this would be a culture fit interview. I was surprised when they started asking me questions about database tables and how to connect them. Even during these questions the interviewers told me, " I know you are applying for a front end position and these are back end questions..." This confused me why I was answering these questions. We then moved to the white board and I was asked to describe how to build a shopping cart. I felt like I was applying for a non-intern role and with the back-end questions made me feel like it was a full stack engineering position. After 2 1/2 hours of whiteboarding I was finally told that I would have a conversation with Marc. Marc then told me a project that I would possibly work on if I was hired and explained it to me. I was told that the HR associate that was supposed to write the offer letter was not working that day and he would get back to me in the beginning of the following week with results. I received an email from Marc at 9:30pm on Sunday saying that they "did not see the characteristics in me that they were looking for." I do not think that being rejected was negative. I think that the process was unprofessional and having multiple people working for the same company saying very different things was absolutely frustrating.
