I applied online, and then attended a 15 min phone interview. The 15 minute phone interview was straightforward - why I was interested in Shopify, and my relevant work experience. I was then invited into a video "Life Story" interview of 1 hour with another recruiter. The Life Story recruiter was late (it happens), the recruiter seemed approachable but perhaps a bit distracted (over-worked? bored?), and the conversation just felt a bit awkward for me.
I was told I’d hear back within a week of the Life Story interview - after 1.5 weeks, I followed up via email. It’s been about a month and I haven’t had any contact or response.
From a candidate care perspective, it felt a bit disappointing to invest time in two interviews and not receive a formal outcome even after following up. It also felt a bit odd being eliminated from the Life Story stage - although it sounds like an interesting interview format, I’m really not sure what I was being assessed on or what feedback one would provide from that interview (e.g. did I not make the “right” life choices according to Shopify? Did they just not like me?!?!). From a D&I perspective, I’m also curious about how this format works for people who are neuro-divergent, or who aren’t the “typical" tech profile, or "typical" Shopify personality type.
Shopify is a strong brand, which appealed to me. From what I learnt throughout conversations however, it seems like their recruitment process is lengthly with multiple stages (4+ interviews per role). I wonder how the longer process impacts quality of hires - who knows, maybe it's a positive impact, but either way, I'd probably get frustrated delivering, what seems to me, a bit of a fussy process.
