Interview
I interviewed for a UX / Web Developer role at Shopify. It took about 4 months, including a full day (8 hour) onsite in Toronto, 2 video pair programming, and 5 phone interviews. Overall it was an extremely negative experience, I found the code assessment developers (all white male “tech bro” types) to be seriously bias against women. I am an experienced Software Engineer and the Shopify developers I spoke with condescendingly talked down to me, aggressively interrupted me, and did not allow me to speak or demonstrate my skills. The recruiters I worked with were extremely slow and unreliable to response to emails and quite frankly, wasted my time - requiring me to do a total of 7 video/phone interviews in addition to fly internationally for a full 8 hour onsite interview before eventually rejecting me for a position.
I warn other women / POC developers and engineers to avoid Shopify. They will waste your time and disrespect you with their long, chaotic, and extremely bias interview process. My experience over 4 months and many long hours, and long emails with the Shopify hiring system - it is clearly a system designed to only hire more white male “tech bro” developers.
Don’t waste your time with their bias interview process that disrespects candidates.

Question 1
What technical projects are you currently working on?

Interview
From start to finish they were very easy to communicate with. I feel like the interview process was easy, however I personally work in a language that was not offered as a coding option so I struggled a little bit to remember React and Node so I didn't get an offer.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Rockville, MD) in Feb 2022

Application:
- Recruiter reached out to me and applied after that
Interview:
The first process is an easy coding exercise and a life story. Then after that, the second round of the interview is 4 hours long where you do deep dive into what you worked on and 2 coding interviews. The coding interview was a relatively average question where you get to build a small web application for both of the coding interviews.
My overall experience was ok.
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify in Jan 2022
Interview
First process is an easy coding exercise. In their recruitment page, they wanted the interviewee to think aloud to give the interviewer an idea of the applicant's thought process. Assuming that they value problem solving skills more than output.
Even if you have the solution done (pseudo code/summary) but you haven't finished the implementation it would be an instant rejection. So I suggest to future applicants to just type in a straight forward console log output.
Interviewer - was not engaged, and just talked when the time is up. No 5 minute warning. Was also not aware of the solution of the problem so they can't give you feedback when asked about the approach of your solution. Also talked about himself more than what a developer inside Shopify does.
