I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Shopify
Interview
The team was great but beware of them searching for competitor intel. The first two interviews are great -- you get to know them. The life story isn't the hard part as their HR team is so understanding and supportive. The hard part is the third part -- a 3.5 hour process of three back to back interviews with a half hour break where you present in the first interview, and go through a case study in the second interview, and then speak to the hiring manager in the third interview. After that process and the 5th interview, I was not contacted even after I followed up which I thought was very surprising for a well respected company; especially "one of the best in Canada." It didn't leave a great impression on me and I felt used.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
They are very focused on your thought process. Bring case studies.
Unfortunately a recruiter based out of the Netherlands was very disrespectful.
When I shared about wanting to explore the opportunity and see if there is a fit with the team, the recruiter responded with "with regards to fit, that is our job to decide not yours." That was a very unnecessary comment. It goes without saying that the decision to move forward with a candidate lies with the company, but an interview is also a two-way conversation for a candidate to also learn about the company and role.
When it was time for me to ask questions, I asked if the hiring manager was looking out for a specific type of candidate so I could understand what kind of person would succeed in the team. The response: "Everything is written in the job description." The point of letting candidates ask questions is to learn more about the role beyond the job description, no?
The lack of basic respect left such a bad impression, please do better.
Apply, recruiter, hiring manager, team member, and maybe one more senior individual depending on the level of the role. It can get a bit tedious but I felt they were pretty quick through the process and communicated well in terms of progression and next steps.
the interview process was good and they did not take a long time to answer back, there were 3 interviews and the last one is the hardest but if you prepare for it it will be okay.
