I applied online. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Apr 2018
Interview
Great interview process. Starts off with a "Life Story" which is a casual conversation with the recruiter followed by a portfolio review. Everyone was kind throughout the process and feedback was timely.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Boston, MA) in May 2022

1-Lifestory Interview
2-Portfolio Walkthrough
I got a referral from a hiring manager who is super nice and supportive. Thanks sososo much!
The Lifestory interview was quite casual, about how I entered the design field, and why I'm interested in Shopify questions like that. The recruiter who did this round with me was very friendly and professional.
The second round was terrible. One of the designers, a male hiring manager based in ON, Canada, was "not there" in the whole process. I could tell that he doesn't like my work from the first minute I showed my presentation deck. He asked questions I have already explained in my deck. Along the way, there were many times that I could tell that he was multitasking, but none of the tasks was about my design. The other designer was quite supportive and positive during the process.
What makes me disappointed most is that in the end, when I asked a question about the monetization model and traffic gaining method because he mentioned that he worked with TikTok X Shopify before, he described my question as "very funny you know". While his answer had nothing to do with my question at all. He wasn't listening.
I don't want to speak ill of the company or the designers here, but I do feel it's very random. I interviewed with 15 companies so far including FLAG, and this is the only fail I have in the portfolio walkthrough process.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Why do you want to join Shopify?
Tell me about your design story.
I went through the life story interview and talked about general aspects of my life. Although I did focus on my career related past, I may have gone a bit off topic into general life events which may have been the bummer for me. Overall, it was a very casual, 2 sided conversation with the interviewer.
