I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify in Oct 2021
Interview
I randomly received an email from a Shopify recruiter one day, despite never having applied to the company before. I decided to give it a go since I figured I had nothing to lose. Spoke with a different recruiter for a 30 min phone call who then scheduled me for the Life Story & live pair programming code test. The Life Story portion I felt went really well and was an enjoyable talk. However, things went downhill when it came time to do the live code test. My interviewer for this had a terrible audio connection and I couldn't hear them at all. When I finally could, they gave me back 10 minutes, but for the remainder of the interview, their voice sounded like a robot and was hard to hear. For the actual code prompt, I chose to code in JavaScript since I am a front-end developer and was told I was interviewing for a front-end position. My interviewer was an engineering manager with a background in backend code who was not familiar with JavaScript at all and didn't know methods such as map or that unquoted property names are valid in a JavaScript object. The interviewer kept asking me to explain JavaScript basics like this, which wasted time, and ultimately, although I knew how to solve the prompt, I didn't get a chance to fully implement my solution due to running out of time. I was instantly rejected afterward which is a shame since I'm pretty sure I would have moved on had I had a better interviewer who knew JavaScript and didn't have technical audio issues.

Interview
From start to finish they were very easy to communicate with. I feel like the interview process was easy, however I personally work in a language that was not offered as a coding option so I struggled a little bit to remember React and Node so I didn't get an offer.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Rockville, MD) in Feb 2022
Interview
Application:
- Recruiter reached out to me and applied after that
Interview:
The first process is an easy coding exercise and a life story. Then after that, the second round of the interview is 4 hours long where you do deep dive into what you worked on and 2 coding interviews. The coding interview was a relatively average question where you get to build a small web application for both of the coding interviews.
My overall experience was ok.
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify in Jan 2022
Interview
First process is an easy coding exercise. In their recruitment page, they wanted the interviewee to think aloud to give the interviewer an idea of the applicant's thought process. Assuming that they value problem solving skills more than output.
Even if you have the solution done (pseudo code/summary) but you haven't finished the implementation it would be an instant rejection. So I suggest to future applicants to just type in a straight forward console log output.
Interviewer - was not engaged, and just talked when the time is up. No 5 minute warning. Was also not aware of the solution of the problem so they can't give you feedback when asked about the approach of your solution. Also talked about himself more than what a developer inside Shopify does.
