Interview
In line with what others have posted about Shopify's recruiting process, I was told during the initial "interview" that I had made it through to the second step, the "life story." I was told to Google Shopify life story to prepare for another 30 minute interview and that someone would reach out to schedule. I waited and did not get a response for week so I emailed back only to get an out of office response. I did not think too much of it, but now that I was told that I did not make it through, part of me wonders if their process moved on without me due to a mishandling of the entire process. Good recruiting processes would make a good faith effort to limit this perception of unfair distributive fairness, but unfortunately Shopify did not make that effort.
A company should not lie during their interviewing process. I was led to believe that I had the next interview secured and that someone would reach out to schedule. There were no verbal/nonverbal cues that might have suggested otherwise during the first interview. I am not upset that I did not get the second interview, I am upset that I was lied to.
My advice to interviewees would be to keep on top of things if you are waiting for an answer from Shopify about a job, especially if you are juggling multiple possible interviews. Best of luck!
Update: When you call in for the phone interviews, make sure that you use your country's call in number. They will list the Canadian call in number and if you call in to that number from a US line, then you'll be paying long distance. I just noticed today that I had to pay ~$13 to be lied to.

Question 1
1) Describe a difficult situation that you had with one of your accounts.
2) What do you do in your current role?
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Shopify in May 2024
Interview
Unlike any process I’ve had in my nearly 2 decades of experience. I was referred in and then sent to a recruiter who didn’t offer any advice on what to expect. She brought up compensation and only told me OTE. I always exceed my rev targets so I knew that wouldn’t be a problem but having been laid off, I wanted to know my base salary so I scheduled a 10 min meeting with her to get that info. She was condescending and acted like I didn’t listen the first time by saying “[My name] if you remember we discussed the OTE last time.” Totally gaslit me. I loved the people I spoke with though. They’re kind and funny and make the interviews conversational. I would’ve crushed this job but I think that simply because I only had a couple years of ecomm experience (even though I studied it like I was back in college for this), I wasn’t selected. Don’t listen to the “life story” advice. Just make sure you can connect the dots on your resume. Keep answers succinct & impactful because they have a huge candidate pool. This job is an 80/20 split, so the base pay (I assume) is pretty low and you have to sell to hit the 20% delta - which is a given these days, anyway. Love the company and the mission and bummed I didn’t get it but just had a bad taste in my mouth from the recruiter being hasty with me.

I had a great interview process. Kind people, responsive recruiter, straightforward interview process! No overly complicated or trick questions, which I really appreciated. Definitely prepare for the most common questions (tell me about a time...) and have anecdotes ready for typical MSM/CSM questions.
