I submitted my resume through the company website. I was contacted by an HR rep who then also asked me to fill out a paper application (which was an odd thing to request in 2017). I had a brief non-technical interview with the HR rep, who then scheduled me for an interview with the hiring manager.
I attended the interview with the hiring manager and another sysadmin. They asked typical interview questions about dealing with difficult coworkers, etc. They asked me about my experience with various technologies like SQL, AWS, AD, etc.
After the main interview, I was then set to the task of the hands-on portion of the interview, which was to assemble a server from parts, boot it, and update windows. This felt extremely out of place for the position I was interviewing for (which I had been led to believe was more cloud focused, hence why they wanted someone with AWS skills).
I asked the sysadmin some pretty basic technical questions to gauge his experience level. He was unable to answer basic questions about DNS records, ports used by various technologies, and other very basic network and domain functionality. It did not seem that he had any formal training in systems administration.
Overall the interview was very simple and easy to get through. The hiring manager advised I should expect a call within a few days as they wanted me to interview with their COO as well. After 3 business days with no contact, I emailed the HR rep to follow up, and she advised that they had already offered the job to another candidate.
Overall, the experience with the company as a whole indicates that they have poor communication (both internally and externally). Having an employee with a far lower skill level in required areas than the candidate being interviewed is also a red flag, indicating internal issues with structure.
Overall, I was not impressed and likely would not have accepted an offer had one been made.
