      Technical Support Engineer Interview

      Jun 23, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SiriusXM (Boston, MA) in Jun 2022

      Interview

If you are part of the BIPOC demographic just please for your own self-respect and integrity STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. Especially for their tech-based roles. Read below to read why. The application process was smooth and seamless and was the only highlight of the experience. The interview left such a sour taste in my mouth that I refused to allow anyone to go into this process blindsided with the unprofessionalism and prejudice as I have. I arrived to the virtual interview that was held via Zoom with the hiring manager who was also the technical manager for the role I applied for. To my surprise, as no prior notification was provided. There was an additional member present in the interview. The person happened to be a current technical support representative. As soon as they saw what I looked like their facial expressions changed from eager to dread. I guess they couldnt wrap their head around how a black woman could have the skills shared on their resume. Now this is where the blatant professionalism, patronizing, and condescension began. The interviewer started talking AT ME for 20 minutes of the allotted 30-minute interview about the basics of the role. NOTHING TECHNICAL mind you. They did not ask me questions about my resume or skill set ONCE throughout the whole duration. While this took place the other member on the team sat back and simply smiled at it all going down. It wasn't until I cut in and talked about my skills, that their eyes widened in surprise as if to say, " oh wow this black person is actually smart?!" When I asked the interviewer if they could give an example of what common technical issues one would come across in the role, they deferred any technical questions to the other member on the call. A-HA! Now I understood the dynamic at play. the reason the other member was present was due to the initial interviewer themselves not having any knowledge of the technical skills required for the role despite them being in control of who gets hired for it? How does that work? The interviewer asked me for 10 more minutes of my time to explore my skill set...so they didn't even review my resume? how disrespectful. The other rep on the call patronized me by asking me to explain what a VPN and API was and patronizingly said, " its alright if you don't know. You can say I don't know. We will teach you." with such a toothy smile. That's when it clicked and I am happy this ghosted me as I could see how my work experience would be if I HAD been employed in this role. The other member that was present could be the favorite of possibly a few members within the team who be in control of how the training which they shamelessly shared is nonexistent in the role, if the seasoned tech reps liked you or not would determine whether you succeed or burn in the role, and all ones one-on-one reviews feedback would depend on the aforementioned traits shared. Who needs that toxicity? Please if you are a BIPOC stay far far away from this company. You will not be welcomed. 2022 and this is still happening what a shame.
