I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (Chicago, IL)
Interview
This was the worst interview I have ever been apart of. Pre-pandemic I was invited to interview by a director who saw my work at a design event. Questions were all the normal questions and most of the time was spent walking through my portfolio. The two interior designers I interviewed with were so incredibly rude. They spent the interview distracted but would pop their head up every now and then to belittle something in my portfolio. After that was done, the lead interior designer asked me “so in this position, if I tell you to get me something- are you going to know what to grab?” After that, I was invited back for a final interview with one days notice. I lived 10 hours away from Chicago at the time- a college student with no money. When I responded to see if it could be virtual because I had to work my shift the next morning (and because I couldn’t afford to get to Chicago and get a hotel room), they never responded to me again. I know getting a job straight out of school is competitive and they were probably looking for who could make it happen on short notice- but it felt rude and ego driven do to that to a broke college student. Of course I didn’t get an offer, but I felt like my interview experience was a good indicator of what the job would have been like.
