Upon arriving, the first thing that I noticed was that the flight attendants were extremely UNFRIENDLY and unapproachable. After signing in, handing over a copy of my resume, I apparently rubbed the attendants the wrong way by politely informing them that the tape measure was incorrectly placed an entire 2 INCHES above the floor, which incorrectly puts some candidates out of the running from the start. Second, upon entering the room, you are instructed to mingle, be friendly, and interact on the whole. No problem. I've been in customer service and healthcare for over 15 years. During the information segment, the flight attendant (Erin?-domicile in San Diego)-who was presenting, actually kept her head down the entire time, mumbling, reading fast, mispronouncing words, and she said "Umm" so much I actually lost track of what the lady was trying to say. But, to her credit, her sarcasm was right on track! The single male FA, was apparently attempting to be cutting and witty like the character Jack, on Will & Grace, but failed miserably, instead coming across as a disgruntled, bitter FA who despised his career and wanted everyone else to be just as miserable. He even had the audacity to tell us "Please don't talk to me. I'm overly tired. Ask the other ladies.. Please don't crowd me."
After the info segment, you are told that during your 60 second presentation, you are NOT to say that you love to travel, or mention your family/friends in the aviation industry. Well, apparently, SkyWest loves FAs that don't follow instructions, because every candidate that walked up and said those things, and also went over their 60 second allotment, was offered a F2F interview. One candidate, even name-dropped a current FA that the recruiters work with and got the F2F based off of who she knew! The SkyWest FAs were so unfriendly, I was actually glad afterwards that I didn't get the offer, as you could tell working & training with them would be a repeat of the movie "Mean Girls".
The presenting FA actually explained to us that around 30% of candidates get sent home on the 1st day for failing the test or for their tattoos;which in my opinion is due to FAs not being adequately trained by HR to choose candidates; because if they can't follow simple instructions for a 60 second presentation, why would they be able to pass any type of test that requires studying and retention of facts? The people that they chose were so incoherent that I will encourage my loved ones NOT to fly SkyWest because I am honestly terrified of the lack of safety training and common sense this new round of FAs will have. There were so many AMAZING candidates there that were passed up simply due to the current FAs feeling that those candidates would make them "look bad" instead of realizing that we all would represent SkyWest in the best possible light and generate the most return passengers, and therefore, revenue? ADVICE TO MANAGEMENT: Actually send trained HR reps to recruitment events, and not just cliques of catty, unprofessional women who would rather gossip and deny applicants due to jealousy, and maybe your turnover rate would decrease. Just a thought.
