Terrible overall interview experience with Slack, arguably one of the worst in my career thus far. It was full of unresponsiveness, bait and switch, lack of transparency, and overall sense of feeling devalued.
I was referred in by a friend. I had a first round interview with the recruiter and that went smoothly. Had a 2nd round with the hiring manager (skip level up) and that went smoothly. Had a 3rd round Chronological Interview, that went smoothly. That's when things started going South.
Before going into detail there, I want to mention that throughout this process, the Recruiter was really unprofessional. She messed up our first interview time, and even texted me while I was mid-way through an interview with another company (clearly she didn't read my email about timing).
This same recruiter was very unresponsive throughout, and took more than 1 week to schedule the 3rd round Chronological interview even after I told her I was going into final round interviews with another company.
After this less ideal process, she apparently took a leave of absence midway and handed me to another Recruiter, which was not a better experience.
This is when things really go south. After my Chronological Interview, the new recruiter calls me congratulating me that they want to bring me into final rounds....but only if I'm okay to interview for a lower position. I ask to talk to the hiring manager to get a better understanding for this lower position and how it falls into the team structure, and that's when I learn that the role they're trying to push me into is not one, but actually two levels below the original level I applied and have been interviewing for.
She then tries to convince me that it's the "exact same role" but just with smaller companies. I ask if she's okay with considering me for 1 level up (keep in mind this is 1 level down from the role I've been going through 75% of the interview process for - 'Senior Experience Consultant'). She agrees to keep an open mind in the final presentation. I ask her for more detail around the 3 different roles but is very vague and informs me its just about # of years of experience.
I later learn from an internal source that previously there was no internal leveling for this team, this is something the hiring manager is trying to implement because of internal politics...and I would be the only person in this lower position (2 levels down). This internal resource also conveys that this role is essentially a post-undergrad role (keep in mind that I'm 10 years into my career and I have already been a Manager).
I spent the entire weekend working on my presentation and I go above and beyond what is assigned to basically prove myself. I shoved as much content into that presentation to showcase my experience, but ultimately was later phoned by the recruiter that want to move me forward, but still at 2 levels down. When asked why I wasn't offered a role at the right level, the feedback I was given was "everyone loved your presentation, but mentioned some time management issues". Yes, that's because I was trying to showcase all of my experience, and that seems like an odd piece of feedback to insist on to bring them in at a lower level. I ask the recruiter to connect once more to the hiring manager, which she agreed.
As I'm waiting - I receive a verbal offer have another company who has provided me with a fair, competitive offer. I email the Slack recruiter to talk to the Hiring manager again and inform her of my exploding offer, and I just get a 12 hour window of complete unresponsiveness. I follow up with the Hiring Manager...no response.
Finally I get a call from the Slack recruiter who said "I think it's best to part ways since there's misalignment and they're looking for that Associate Level". I agreed with her, in my mind -- why did they market themselves as looking for a Senior Experience Consultant and then bait and switch me right before my final round interview and push me 2 levels down? To her credit, she sincerely apologized for the very poor interviewing experience.
To say the least, I'm pretty disappointed in the poor experience with Slack. In speaking with a Career Advisor, it seems like they're trying to get a candidate in at a severe discount, potentially taking advantage of the COVID rough economic times??
