      Senior Animator Interview

      Mar 26, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Melbourne
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Sledgehammer Games (Melbourne)

      Interview

I was cold-contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn and was told that I had the possibility of working from home for this position. I then went through a tedious interview process filled with disorganization and technical issues. Afterwards I was presented with a bait-and-switch and was told the position would be on-site in Melbourne and I would be expected to move my family there and work in-studio full time. Activision apparently only grants certain employees the ability to work from home permanently. During the zoom interview the animation director had his camera intentionally turned off during our whole call which I found pretty unprofessional and uncomfortable as I had my camera on. They then asked for an animation test to be completed but at this point I was no longer interested in the job since I had hoped to WFH. I thanked them and withdrew my application. At this point the recruiter decided it was appropriate to pass on to me that they thought my qualifications were lacking and shared some criticism of my portfolio- again, very odd considering they had just asked if I would be willing to move on to the next interview stage and had essentially rejected them. They ruined whatever good will I might have still had for the company with this amateurish recruitment and interview process.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked a lot of questions about if I had played COD and what I thought of the games. They asked about my technical abilities etc. They seemed to want me to be able to do everything from technical art to designing gameplay animation systems, polishing mocap to cinematic camera layout and facial animation. Having worked in games and animation for well over a decade, I know that this wouldn't be necessary as these things are handled by multiple departments but sure, you do you Sledgehammer Games.
