I applied online and received an email to schedule the initial interview the same day. I responded and the HR interview was scheduled for a couple days later. That interview went great, and I was told I'd hear back in 1 to 2 days with the managers availability to schedule the 2nd interview. I heard back 2 days later that they were no longer interested. I learned that theyd reached out to mutual contacts and had effectively done a reference check without permission, letting others know that I was searching for a job that I would not have informed of that fact. I found this incredibly unprofessional, and now makes me glad to not work for this manager. I'm assuming there was poor communication between the HR and manager, as the references they checked gave me good reviews.
