I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SpaceX in Oct 2015
Interview
The first question was basically "How do our engines work?" I was a bit taken aback because it was the straight-no-chaser type question (they barely introduced themselves). They were very critical of my answers even though they weren't actually all that wrong (looked them up later). The recruiter was unprofessional and canceled the interview without telling me and then took weeks to get back to me. I was offered a second interview, but declined because I had already applied, interviewed, and accepted an offer at a different company by the time she got back to me.
The interview started off with the interviewer asking a few behavioral questions, with the majority of the interview consisted of technical questions about engineering fundamentals and applying them to scenarios

Walk me through your immediate step by step troubleshooting roadmap to isolate the failure
I applied online, and a recruiter reached out a few months later to set up my first interview with a Team Lead. It went well so I moved onto the second interview with the Team Manager. Both interviews were extremely technical and they grilled you on your projects.
