I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Sparq (Augusta, GA) in Aug 2020
Interview
They approached me about the position and I decided to interview for it. The process consisted of a series of interviews that were mostly about culture with some tech stuff thrown in. They spent a lot of time trying to sell me on how great their culture is. It took over a month to go from interviews to offer.
The reason I declined the offer was the lower compensation coupled with draconian clauses in their employee covenant agreement and handbook which contradicted the culture pitches during the interviews. None of thus was done under NDA so here are a few selections to give you a flavor of the company:
From the covenants:
1. In the Covenant, they have non competition, non solicit and non competition clauses with no specified time frame.
2. A non-disparagement clause which attempts to gag employees.
3. An assignment of rights that comes close to making it impossible to work on side projects while employed for them.
4. An injunctive relief clause that limits your recourse against a frivolous lawsuit.
5. You agree to sign any and all amendments to the agreement presented to you as a condition of employment or are considered to be in breach of the agreement.
6. You agree to take on fiduciary responsibilities commensurate with a board position, not that of a rank and file employee.
From the Employee Handbook:
1. If you don't give two weeks notice on resignation they will not verify your dates of employment of salary with other employers. But they reserve the right to fire you at will.
2. They don't pay out un-used vacation when leaving the organization.
3. A strict attendance and punctuality policy that would be appropriate for a shift work, not knowledge work.
4. If you take more than three days of sick time you have to get a doctors note to return to work.
5. Crazy personal device restrictions such as "Personal devices cannot be operating in a mode that places the device in a state where it can
act as a server or provider of services via wireless connectivity, such as a Wi-Fi Hotspot or
gaming server." and " Personal devices are not to broadcast data for the purposes of wireless device discovery.
Colleagues are expected to disable these services if this option is supported by their device’s
operating system."
6. Personal use of the Internet is not allowed.
The 401k company match is also not guaranteed and vests over 4 years instead of immediate vesting.
From everything I could see this looks like a company that is going to primarily attract and retain C players with limited options. I can't see many good A player devs staying given the other options out there.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How do you mentor junior developers? How do you keep on top of new technology?
Four interviews, initial HR screen of background, technical interview, take home assessment, interview going over assessment, behavioral interview.
Be wary of false promises. I was given excellent feedback throughout the entire process, and told I would be submitted to a client for review. After weeks of waiting, I got an automatic rejection response from them (despite being told multiple times I would be moving through the process).
In consulting positions come and go, and its fine if things don't work out, however I expect more professional behavior in explaining why, especially after weeks of interviews, meetings and preparation.

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Sparq in Nov 2024
Interview
Didn't make it past the recruiter screening because they didn't think the number of years I had with a specific technology would result in an offer meeting my salary expectations. Perfectly understandable. Thankful the recruiter let me know I would be judged more on this single number than on my actual experience.
Fantastic! Initial zoom was very informative and had visual aids that helped explain the total interview process. The recruiter was extremely helpful and he answered all of my questions before I needed to ask them.
