I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Spencer Gifts (Westland, MI) in Jun 2011
Interview
The interview is done directly from a pre-printed form with mostly behavioral questions. The manager wants to know if you can work well with others, you have integrity, and can communicate effectively. Prepare to tell a few stories that highlight your ability to deal with a difficult situation and show a positive outcome resulting from your efforts. Phrase your answers in 3 parts: 1) What is the situation, and context or details the interviewer should know about what is going on. 2) How did you analyze the situation and what ACTION did you take. 3) What happened as a direct result of the action you took.

Question 1
Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something that you did not want to do? Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond to help someone (doesn't have to be a customer)? Sell me this pen (this one is not on the form, but the job requires really pushing sales so it is fair to ask this question to ascertain your selling ability)?
An easy, fun and great way to figure out the job, they really walk you through and make you feel comfortable and know what your getting into.the questions are easier than you think and more fun.
laid back, on the sales floor, very chill. it was with the store manager and assistant manager. wanted to know if i was fine with training and selling what was in the back of the store and jewelry.

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Spencer Gifts (Puyallup, WA) in Sep 2025
Interview
Keep in mind, THEY called ME to schedule an interview. The hiring manager who interviewed me acted like I was bothering her for coming in at my scheduled time. While we were interviewing it was like she couldn't even pretend to be interested at all. Like she was just going through the motions to get me out of there. Facial expressions were not pleasant either. I honestly should've walked out, but I wanted to be polite and professional. At the end she couldn't even be bothered to tell me whether or not they'd be in contact or when to expect them to accept or reject me. I was told that's it, have a good day, and I was walked out. I figured I wouldn't be hired just based on her nasty attitude, but I never even received at least a rejection afterwards. Figures that's what happens when visible posers work at alt stores.
