1) Initial recruiter call lasted for about 15 mins. During the call I clearly said my salary expectations and the recruiter said they are open to it and wanted to proceed further
2) Within few days, I was arranged a technical interview on Zoom with another Principal Sofware Engineer for about an hour. It went pretty well
3) Feedback was good on 2) per recruiter so they arranged for a virtual technical interview with in few days
4) There were around 5 engineers in the virtual technical interview on Zoom. It lasted for about an hour. It was pretty straight forward
5) Feedback was good on 4) per recruiter so they arranged another round of interview with the Director and Manager in the same video call for about 45 mins
6) I was expecting that to be more of behavioral interview but it was a technical interview. Neverthless, it went quite well. There was a coding excercise and some design questions
7) Followed up with the recruiter and he said he would like to have a call. I called the recruiter and he said the team feels you are technically strong however we can't offer the Principal Software Engineer role but we can offer Senior Software Engineer role but the salary would be less than what we discussed. I declined the offer and said to the recruiter I have to pass this one and I could say he was surpised based on his reaction. To me, it feels they just tried to put me on spot for less than what I asked and thought I would take it. If money was an issue, they should have told upfront and not waste time. If I didn't do well in the interview they should have looked at other candidates. Not this kind of unprofessional behavior.
