      Senior Backend Engineer Interview

      May 20, 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Splice

      Interview

      1. Recruiter Screen 2. Hiring Manager 3. Technical Deep Dive 4. Systems Design 5-7. Culture Fit/Behavioral Process took a little over a month from first recruiter call to offer, but some of that time was because I had conflicts in my schedule. For the technical deep dive, there were some behavioral questions and then a pull request review in Go. Fair questions that allow you to demonstrate how you think and work. The systems design is what you would expect where questions about your design get progressively more difficult. Emphasis on demonstrating how you think, communicate, and work through problems rather than "getting it right." For the other interviews, there is a lot of screening for cultural fit at Splice. More so than other interviews and companies I have worked at in the past. There is an emphasis on collaboration.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Splice in Feb 2018

      Interview

Had a video chat for 20 minutes in the morning. Received assignment link on GitHub. I needed to implement solution using programming language I'm most familiar with. I completed an assignment by the end of day of the interview and sent my zipped solution by email as required. Next day in the morning got email reply saying that based on my interview and my solution they don't want to move forward. I'm not sure if they looked at my solution, because it was really quick response, considering they promised to anonymize my submission and evaluate it using a rubric. My guess is that I failed in some behavioral aspect during video chat, so my interviewer made personal decision to cut me off. Not really professional behavior in my opinion. If he wasn't sure in some behavioral aspect initially, he didn't have to proceed and give me an assignment.

      Question 1

During the video chat interviewer asked me what I understand by being "Senior" developer and why I want to work for Splice and why I want to leave my current job.
