      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Spotify (London, England)

      Interview

Title: Strong process overall, but a very disappointing final interview I interviewed with Spotify for a senior role several years ago and had a largely positive experience until the final stage. The process consisted of seven rounds before the final interview. I met with a range of highly senior and experienced individuals. At times it was intimidating, but everyone was respectful, professional, and engaged. The recruiter was exceptional. She was supportive, communicative, and created a very positive experience throughout. By the later stages, conversations were going very well and it strongly felt that an offer was likely. Role scope and compensation had already been discussed, so expectations were clearly set going into the eighth and final interview. The final interview was with a very senior leader in global communications and public affairs. Given the stage and level, I expected a high standard of engagement. Unfortunately, the experience was the opposite. The interviewer appeared disengaged and uninterested from the start. There were ongoing technical issues, visible personal distractions in the background, and very limited effort to actively listen or engage. The conversation felt one-sided and, at times, dismissive. It was a stark contrast to the professionalism shown by everyone else throughout the seven earlier rounds. During the discussion, it became clear that there was little genuine interest in my candidacy. It gave the impression that the decision may already have been made prior to the interview. After such an extensive and senior-level process, this was both surprising and disappointing. Even if a different direction had already been chosen, a basic level of presence, focus, and respect should still be expected at the final stage. What makes this stand out is the inconsistency. The earlier stages reflected a thoughtful and well-run hiring process. This final interaction did not. I continue to believe Spotify has many talented and professional people, aligned with the broader vision associated with Daniel Ek. However, this experience highlights how much influence a single senior individual can have on the overall candidate experience.
