      Research Scientist Interview

      Apr 4, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Spotify (London, England) in Nov 2018

      Interview

I applied online in late November and I was contacted by a recruiter a few days later. Then I had an initial hangouts call with the research director where I told her about my experience and she explained the application process. Then I had two online interviews with researchers/engineers from the offices in Boston and New York. The first interview was more technical asking a few specific questions (describe your favorite clustering method, regularization in deep neural networks) but the second interview was solely about problems they face with their recommendation system. Then I was invited for two days interviews in their London office where I had five more one hour interviews (programming, values, product desing, ML) and a one hour presentation about my research. (In fact, most of the interviews were still online with people from the New York office). In general, the interviews went well, all interviewers were very nice, competent and well-intended. Also, they have a really great office in London! At the end they didn't make me an offer, despite "excellent performance in the interviews", because there was another applicant with experience in product design. In general, the interview process is well designed and even if there are many interviews they are not very stressful. However, the interview process took ridiculously long. My first interview was November 26 and the final decision was made on February 19! I never postponed an interview and was always available for the first possible date. In the first interview with the research director she assured me she likes very much my background and that it would fit very good into the team. Apparently later, maybe in January, someone with a batter background applied and they had to drag the process. Advice to the management: If someone made it through the whole application process maybe it would be more respectful to the applicant if the research director informs him/her about the decision and makes some effort to explain reasons for the decision. The recruiter is nice but clearly clueless and the brief call with him feels like reading a generic rejection letter.

      Interview

Pretty standard but very long process. They disappeared after, and never came back to say yes/no. Very unprofessional. But scientists there are good and they were really nice during the process.

      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Spotify in May 2022

      Interview

Got an invitation for a recruiter call. The call was very positive and the recruiter said I would likely be moved to the final stage as I have a internal recommendation from the team. The recruiter also said that she will get back to me within the same week to schedule the next round. The reality at Spotify is a bit different though: there was radio silence for almost 4 weeks and I did not receive any further feedback. I then got a mail that they are sorry for the slow process as the team was on vacation. They promised to move forward with the application process very soon. After two more weeks of silence I got a response that I won’t advance to the next round and they already hired someone else. After speaking with peers I found this was a common pattern with Spotify. The application process is very slow and unreliable. I won’t consider applying again.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Spotify (New York, NY) in Jul 2021

      Interview

Unprofessional, extremely disrespectful interview process. I applied to the research scientist position in the Human-Computer Interaction team. The process started in May, and after two 45min technical screens I was asked to do 7 more interviews, including a research talk. The recruiters were unresponsive for a couple of weeks until I emailed the hiring manager, who pressed the recruiter to schedule the interviews. During the whole process, the recruiters were atrocious. The technical interviews were great. I was presented with research problems they are actually trying to solve and we brainstormed solutions together. They are all very smart and nice. I was left with a great impression of the team. Then after these 9 interviews they ghosted me. Yes, after more than 3 months of emails, interviews, and lots of preparation, they could not bother to send an email informing I wasn't selected. I first tried to follow up with the recruiter to no avail. Then I emailed the hiring manager, who seems like a decent person, and to my surprise they never replied. I was shocked as I never heard of this happening in our research community. Absolutely demoralizing.
