Static Media Freelance Writer interview questions

There was a brief interview where I wasn’t asked any questions and mainly given information about the role as if I already had it. I was provided information about the paid trial, which was made to sound like no big deal or a formality. It took a week after the interview to get my paperwork going and then the editor couldn’t start the trial until the week after that. So this was a long process. When I was given access to the style guide and writers hub, I was so confused. Why does a content mill have such rigorous standards and super lengthy explanations about how to write and format every little thing? So weird. Against my better judgment, I went forward with the trial anyway. My pitches were approved with some feedback. I incorporated the feedback into the final article and, all told, spent about 10 hours completing it, including uploading it to their ancient submission system and selecting and cropping photos. I kept thinking, “All of this for $.08 a word?” Wow. A few days later, I received a rejection saying there were too many grammar and sourcing errors in the article, and I wasn’t being offered the role. I looked back at what I submitted, and there were exactly zero grammar issues. And sourcing is something that can be improved through feedback and revision. Also, I have 20 years of writing and editing experience… so none of this computes. After reading some of the reviews here, I’m pretty sure I dodged a bullet. I’d avoid this place if you’re looking to get paid what you’re worth and not be given the runaround. It’s way too much work for literal pennies. There are way better media companies out there that actually know how to work with freelancers. Keep looking.

Mainly took place through email. Essentially discussed my background in brief, as well as scheduled a trial session to produce a small writing sample. Communication was timely, direct, and friendly.
