I applied online and talked to the recruiter first. Then I did a call with one of the other team members, and then I talked to the founder for a few minutes on the phone. As a 4th step, they asked me to spend half a day in the office. So I took half a day off work, and spent the day meeting with the co-founder, another member of the team, and a member of another team. I had to do some exercises within the system to see how I'd handle requests, and then do a sort of presentation of my answers to the co-founder and team member. I was also asked a lot of questions about my experience and prior roles. The interview process was more difficult and extensive than similar companies for similar roles, but I have worked for a startup before and understand it can be a different environment. It was after the interview that the process was really disappointing. It took them quite awhile to get back to me, and when they declined my candidacy, they gave me a vague reason and the whole email was strange. So I asked for some feedback, so I could understand and improve for other roles. I understand and appreciate we don't get all the roles we apply for, but I also felt like, given the amount of time and effort I'd given to the process, that they could have given me some feedback. The recruiter gave me strange and vague answers, and then a week later they sent me a gift card. The whole thing just felt very odd. This was in 2022. A few months after this, the co-founder reached out to me and advised they'd really enjoyed having me in the office and wanted to see whether I'd taken a new role. So I figured maybe they were still interested. So I applied for a different role just a few weeks ago, a year after my first application, and got no response at all. I meet the qualifications of the role, and was really excited about the possibility. I had to reach out twice before I got a response, and then I got another vague response about why they weren't pursuing my candidacy. I again asked for some clarification, but I'm not holding my breath. Overall, I think they have been confusing and frustrating in their hiring practices. They will expect a lot of time and effort from you, but won't give you the same consideration in return.
