I was contacted by a recruiter for an open role and was excited to speak with the hiring manager, but was really disappointed in my experience. First, there was the last minute cancel and reschedule. Then when I had the meeting it felt like he was looking for reasons not to hire me, before I could even establish my strengths (e.g. looking to understand the end dates of prior roles). I have over 15 years of experience and could have certainly shared stories and ideas that would have benefited the company, but I didn't think he was interested. I got the sense he expects candidates of color (like myself) to be perfect, and was searching for any reason not to give me a job. I know the company has a diversity problem, which they even acknowledge in their Impact Statement. In 2021 they made it a priority to address this issue, only to deprioritize it in 2022 when they didn't make any progress. Ha! They are going to need to replace managers like this one if they are going to make any progress on that front.
