I applied online and was excited when the recruiter reached out to schedule a phone screen. But after speaking with both the recruiter and then the hiring manager, I was completely turned off.
The recruiter didn't tell me anything about Grammarly or the role. Instead, they treated it like a one-way interview asking me behavioral questions one after another. As someone who works with recruiters and HR on a daily basis, my understanding is that while the point of a recruiter phone screen is to determine whether or not someone moves to the HM stage, it's also their responsibility to get candidates excited about the role and about the company. Unfortunately, I felt less excited about Grammarly after the phone screen.
Then I met with the hiring manager, who, once again, did not tell me anything about the role. There was a point in the interview when I mentioned that I had a few questions and would love to learn more about the specifics of the role, and she told me we could cover that towards the end. She asked me a series a behavioral questions and whenever I finished responding to a question, she would just move to the next question with no acknowledgement or transition. It was uncomfortably serious and formal and made me think that she is most likely this way with her team and that Grammarly's culture is most likely this way as well.
I'm not sure if they were cold with me because I applied and I wasn't a passive candidate, but I would recommend that their recruiters and hiring managers try to be more amicable and warm in their interviews, and give candidates the opportunity to learn more about Grammarly and the role/teams.
Unfortunately, this interview process has put a bad taste in my mouth for their brand.
