I was invited to complete a HireVue interview within a week of applying for the opportunity. The HireVue interview consisted of 5 questions. The platform provides interviewees 30 seconds to prepare after a question is asked, two response attempts, and limits responses to two minutes. The questions asked during this interview were progressive and meaningful for an HR professional to reflect on.
After completing the HireVue interview, I was invited to meet with the Hiring Manager for 30 minutes. It was an easy interview as it was strictly asked about experiences found on my resume and nothing further. From the interview, it's evident the Hiring Manager indexes on hard/technical skills. Unfortunately, we ran out of time but the Hiring Manager invited me to reconnect for 15 - 20 minutes to provide me with an opportunity to ask questions. While this seemed like a kind gesture to ensure the role was a good fit for both parties, the second meeting consisted of additional questions from the Hiring Manager. Throughout the recruitment process, I did not get to ask the Hiring Manager a single question.
A question that puzzled me was: “Having completed studies in commerce, why did you decide to go into HR?” With experience as a Recruiter, this question was embarrassing to receive and truly solidified the old-school thinking this role would entail. A decision I made five to ten years ago while I was still navigating career paths is not an indicator of my success and drives today as an HR professional. To elevate the question, I’d recommend asking why an individual is still in the people space, which is what I spoke to when responding to the original question.
Given signs of incompatibility, I withdrew my application through the career website immediately after my second meeting with the Hiring Manager. Despite my efforts, I still received a rejection email two weeks later.
