      Software Engineer Interview

      May 3, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at TAIT in Apr 2019

      Interview

Applied via colleague who was an employee. Heard back from them within two weeks of applying. After the initial phone screen, manager that I talked to said he would send a few emails and get back to me, but never did.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Greatest Strengths? Greatest Weakness and how you overcome them? Give an example of a time where you butted heads with management and how you overcame it?

      Interview

I had a phone screening with the HR department, which was followed by an interview with a team member. Both interviews were insightful and provided a good understanding of the role and company culture.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at TAIT (Boulder, CO) in Mar 2019

      Interview

Phone screen by a recruiter, then phone screen by the manager. Then final in person with the manager and team, plus virtual meetings with corporate leadership. They will ask the same questions about your past experiences at each step of the interview. I found this off putting because it seemed like they were trying to cross interrogate me. The in-person interview consisted of an even more in-depth conversation about past projects. I have no problem explaining what I accomplished, but the manager seemed really keen on uncovering anything I might be hiding. There was a gap in my experience due to things going on in my personal life that I didn't want to get into (not exactly appropriate content for someone I just met, let alone an interviewer with my livelihood at stake), but the manager kept pushing for details. Very uncomfortable pushing of boundaries by the manager. After this background check, the team conducts the interview asking technical whiteboard questions in two rounds. The first round was with the junior engineers, a discussion about their stack and the data structures they use currently. The second round was with the lead engineer, about algorithms and design patterns / architecture. After these technical interviews, they will have you video chat with the product owner, then a phone call with an operations person. They ask you to complete an online evaluation, due a few days after the interview, which was sort of like an IQ test and a personality test. After the interview, I was never informed if I was accepted or rejected. Besides the weird pressure from the manager, and the absence of common courtesy that comes with a rejection letter, everyone was polite and friendly. The technical questions asked were fair.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Given that our software has the following data structures, extend them to contain more information. Given a stack of books with different widths, come up with an algorithm that will pack the books in the lowest possible time/space complexity. Design the architecture for a poker game.
